NINTH SEASON OF LIVE JAZZ
AT THE SILVERMINE TAVERN
Norwalk - Since 1993, live jazz in Fairfield County has been happening at the Silvermine Tavern in Norwalk. The ninth season will kick off on Labor Day weekend. The Tavern’s Inn Late Jazz, every Friday and Saturday at 9:00, showcases the area’s finest jazz players as well as occasional appearances of New York jazz artists.
Whether it’s hip, cool, traditional, Latin, bop, Dixieland, hard, or swing, jazz styles share a common bond as a unique American art form. The diverse family tree that makes up jazz has sprouted many branches creating new kinds of music growing along ethnic, regional, and intellectual lines. Created primarily as a live performance art, jazz musicians have created a rich musical heritage. Since jazz is so “in the moment” the only way to really experience it is in a live setting. The spontaneity of a soloist’s own take on a particular melody, the humor during the exchange between musicians, the sublime improvisation that just happens—these are experiences that can only be shared by the live audience and the players.
Inn Late Jazz at Silvermine will start its ninth season with the following wonderful jazz musicians. Come experience an evening of great music in September.
The Bearcats Dixieland Jazz Band and the Joyce DiCamillo Trio will open the ninth season on Friday August 31 and Saturday September 1. Spanning almost the entire history of jazz, from the early days of New Orleans Jazz to contemporary performance, these two groups demonstrate the growth of jazz and the high quality of players in Fairfield County. The Joyce DiCamillo Trio tours internationally. Joyce was honored for her jazz piano last year at the Kennedy Center in Washington as one of the top women performers in the country. Other members of this group are Rick Petrone, former jazz DJ, on Bass and Joe Corsello on drums. Tenor sax player Andy Fusco will join the trio at Silvermine for this performance. The six members of the Bearcats, all virtuosos, appreciate the nuances of the traditional jazz play list. Known for their enthusiastic and infectious style, the sextet takes a fun filled tour of the origins of jazz.
On Friday September, 6 flutist Ali Ryerson will bring a new quartet to Silvermine. With Rex Cadwallader on piano, Mike Ascetta on bass and well-known drummer Arti Dixson the group will feature their new jazz arrangements of songs from Leonard Bernstein’s West Side Story. Fans of Ali who have enjoyed her past performances at Silvermine with guitarist Joe Beck will enjoy this new group. There will be no jazz on Saturday, September 8.
September 14 and 15 bring two quintets to Inn Late Jazz. The Harold Zinno Quintet on Friday features vocalist Nicole along with trumpet, piano, saxophone bass and drums. This swinging group will play selections from their Live at Silvermine recording as well as spirited standards. Saturday brings The Chris Coogan Quintet. Chris leads the group from the piano and sings too. His eclectic style and diverse play list covers jazz standards, blues and a touch of gospel from his Good News Gospel Choir. This is a don’t-miss evening.
Jimmy Hill cut his musical teeth learning from the stars of the Philharmonic, such as Lester Young, Illinois Jacquet, and Charlie Parker. He brings a lifetime of playing experience and an exciting quartet on Friday September 21. Leading the quartet of piano, bass and drums from his tenor sax, Jimmy tours the world of jazz with the authority that comes from being there. His melodic playing and sophisticated solos are always a sensation. There will be no jazz on Saturday, September 22.
Wilton piano player Rob Silvan and his quintet will play on Friday September 28. Rob’s smooth style includes original compositions, standards and the occasional Latin accent.
Silvermine’s Inn Late Jazz enjoys a special relationship with members of the Village Vanguard Big Band. Members of that famous group including John Mosca, Dick Oatts, and Ted Rosenthal have all led bands at Silvermine. On Saturday September 29, Ralph Lalama who plays with the Village Vanguard band and is also a member of the Carnagie Hall Jazz Orchestra will bring his quartet to Silvermine. Ralph toured Europe this summer with Joe Lavano and has recorded numerous times as a leader and side-man. This evening of contemporary jazz will also include Dave Lalama on Piano, Joel Forbes on Bass and Craig Wuepper on drums.
